Most of the day, your brain is doing what’s called directed attention, filtering out noise, tracking deadlines, holding conversations in your head before you’ve had them. That takes effort, even when it doesn’t feel like it. Water seems to switch the brain into a different mode, sometimes called soft fascination, where attention is held gently rather than dragged around.
